The Power of Humor in the Financial Aid Office
Not everyone can say this about their job, “I work in an office where we spend our days giving away money.” When someone asks you, “Where do you work?”, give them that answer and watch their eyes light up. They will definitely want a business card.
Enjoying your job and incorporating a little humor at work can have rewards. I have heard that people who have fun at their jobs are more productive. When you are more productive, think of how many more FAFSAs you can process!
Did you know that having fun facilitates the release of tension and increases an employee’s ability to cope with the stresses of the job? That’s the exact reason a secret language was developed for financial aid professionals. Just ask any student. There is an acronym for everything. Have you completed your FAFSA? Go on NSLDS. It’s based on your AGI. What’s your EFC? Have you signed your MPN? We just received your ISIR. I have heard some offices actually make up others. No wonder you get the glazed over deer in headlights look.
The Financial Aid Office is full of funny material. David Letterman could have a field day. You all have a list of your favorite stories, such as “I got my reward letter from you guys. I’m here for my Obama Grant.” or “Nobody ever told me I have to pay that back.”
According to the authors of Laughter is the Best Medicine, there are actual health benefits to laughter.
- Laughter relaxes the whole body. A good, hearty laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.
- Laughter boosts the immune system. Laughter decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells and infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.
- Laughter triggers the release of endorphins, a chemical 10 times more powerful than the pain-relieving drug morphine. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being.
- Laughter protects the heart. Laughter improves the function of blood vessels and increases blood flow, which can help protect you against a heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
Find ways to laugh and enjoy your day, even amidst stressful situations in your financial aid office…and remember, IT’S OKAY TO HAVE FUN AT WORK!
